CHAPTER I.
HARD FACTS.
'These are the facts, Miss Wharton; hard facts no doubt, but you wished for the truth, and indeed I could not have hidden it from you even if I had wished to do so.' So said a keen but kindly faced old gentleman, as he sat in an office surrounded by despatch and deed boxes which proclaimed his profession to be that of a lawyer.

- 96: Oh how glad Vava was to have 'nursie' there

- 98: Vava answered every question in the algebra paper
- 99: Though she imagined she had told Vava
- 100: And as it happens to quote Stella Vava was quite right
- 101: Murchison with a look of amusement
- 102: Murchison put back his head and laughed
- 103: When Vava had arrived at school
- 104: I met Vava Wharton strolling in just now
- 105: ' agreed Miss Upjohn absent mindedly
- 106: Have you corrected Vava Wharton's Scripture paper
- 107: And if you take my advice you'll have a talk with Vava
- 108: Vava meanwhile went to Stella's new office
- 109: And that nursie took the tea up without being asked
- 110: ' burst out involuntarily from Stella
- 111: But Vava would not be gainsaid
- 112: Vava tossed and turned and went to sleep
- 113: And with this Vava had to be content
- 114: As she and Vava approached the City school
- 115: Which Vava thought very nice of her
- 116: ' declared Vava with enthusiasm
- 117: And was only going to please Vava
- 118: Montague Jones and Vava noted this with satisfaction
- 119: Jones looked sympathetically at Vava
- 120: But Lord Rothery came to the rescue
- 121: For Lomore was home to her too
