CHAPTER I
"TIPPED OFF" BY WIG-WAG
LIEUTENANT POPE, battalion adjutant of the first battalion of the Thirty-fourth United States Infantry, looked up from his office desk as the door swung open and a smart, trim-looking young corporal strode in.
Pausing before the desk, the young corporal came to a precise, formal salute. Then, dropping his right hand to his side, the soldier stood at attention.

- 79: Broke in the leader of the ruffians
- 80: Reflected Sergeant Overton grimly
- 81: Which Hal answered with another shot
- 82: Overton continued to descend rapidly
- 83: Indignant voice of Private Dietz
- 84: With a snarl Hinkey ran over to where Dietz and Johnson lay
- 85: Hinkey uttered a startled yell
- 86: So saying Noll stepped over to his chum
- 87: Then in came Lieutenant Prescott
- 88: Sergeant Overton went over to explain the plan to Noll
- 89: Noll assembled the guard at the side of the trail
- 90: The young Naval officer went on
- 91: And now the enraged bruin made straight for him
- 92: His name is Griller Butch Griller
- 93: His new man Hinkey brought him no luck
- 94: Protested Hal gratefully when calling
- 95: Darrin made both Terry and myself promise
